Root Canal Therapy (RCT)

If the pulp (‘nerve’) inside one of your teeth becomes diseased or injured, endodontic treatment is the last resort to save the tooth from extraction. If the dental pulp is comprised by trauma, inflammation or infection, it must be removed to avoid pain and infection of the surrounding bone area. This treatment generally consists of 3-4 visits and has an average success rate of 90-95% depending on each individual case.

Infection or inflammation of the pulp can be caused by:

• • breakdown of a filling or crown
  • a deep cavity
  • trauma
  • gum disease
  • crack or chip in the tooth
  • extreme wear
  • extensive dental work to the tooth.

Root Canal Therapy is typically performed following the development of an abscess on the root of your tooth.

• An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber.
• The pulp is removed, and the root canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped.
• The infected area is medicated.
• The root canals are filled.
• The crown opening is filled with a temporary material.

Once it has been determined that the Root Canal Therapy has been successful a final filling will be used to restore the tooth, however root canal treated tooth is more fragile as its original core may have hairline cracks or have been already heavily restored.  A long term solution of crown will be recommended to protect the overall tooth structure which allows the tooth to function normally.
